We’re using a variety of biomass sources to meet our heating needs as well. The masonry heater burns wood at a very hot temperature and stores that energy in thousands of pounds of stone, one of the cleanest wood-burning technologies on the market. Last year we burned 625 pressed logs (equivalent to about 150 gallons of heating fuel).  We also use a pellet boiler to heat the building addition. It’s a cleaner-burning device than a wood stove because pellets are dry and dense, and the appliance can control the amount of fuel and oxygen to optimize the burn. During winter months we burn approximately 1 ton of pellets per month, equivalent to about 485 gallons of heating oil over the year.
